Life Insurance with HIV
iam|INSURED has helped thousands of customers living with HIV to get the life insurance that they need to protect their family or mortgage. Life insurance provides valuable financial protection and will pay out a significant cash lump sum to support your loved ones in the event of your death.
Certain life insurance companies can provide better pricing for people with HIV, which is why it is important to get proper advice before you apply.
Income Protection Insurance with HIV
Income Protection Insurance is a newer product for people living with HIV, as until recently most insurance companies would not approve applications from people with HIV.
We’re pleased to say that this is not the case now, and iam|INSURED works closely with Cirencester Friendly to provide HIV Income Protection Insurance policies.
Income Protection Insurance will pay out regular cash sums to replace your usual income, if you need 4 or more weeks off work due to your health.
Health Insurance with HIV
Private health insurance has been growing in popularity in the UK, due to issues with increasing NHS waiting times. Health insurance is often available for people with medical conditions like HIV, and it provides access to top-quality private medical care.
Health insurance is designed to cover new, short-term medical issues, and will often include additional benefits such as discounted gym memberships and 24/7 online GP services.
Private health insurance policies can provide health support and treatments that nicely complement NHS care for ongoing conditions like HIV.

Frequently asked questions about HIV and insurance
Do I have to tell life insurance I have HIV?
YES – You would need to disclose your HIV diagnosis when applying for a new life insurance policy. Not mentioning relevant medical information can cause major issues when your loved ones need to claim on your policy. ‘Non-disclosures’ are one of the main reasons for life insurance not paying out, so it’s important to be honest with your insurer.
You don’t need to tell your insurance company if you already have life insurance and are later diagnosed with HIV. Your life insurance policy and pricing will be based on your health at the time you applied. Your life insurance company doesn’t need to be told about new medical conditions that you are diagnosed with after your policy is active.
Does a HIV test affect life insurance?
This would depend on the result of the HIV test, and a negative test result won’t impact your life insurance application. There are a few reasons why an insurer might ask you to take a HIV test, especially if you need a high amount of cover (£s).
If you are HIV positive, this can affect the price of your policy which is why it is important to speak to the right insurance companies. Some life insurance companies are more understanding of HIV and are better suited to applicants who are HIV positive.
Note: Insurance companies aren’t allowed to share your HIV status without your permission, so this isn’t something that you need to worry about.
What does HIV life insurance cover?
HIV life insurance protects your family or your mortgage in the event of your death. If you die, your loved ones or chosen beneficiaries will be paid a cash lump sum by your insurance company.
This money can offer extra financial support at a difficult time and helps your family to pay for important bills and expenses. The two main types of life insurance are:
- Level term life insurance: This protects your family and pays out a fixed cash lump sum that you choose when you buy your policy.
- Decreasing life insurance: This protects your mortgage and your cover amount will decrease over time to match the amount remaining on your mortgage balance.
Does critical illness insurance pay out for HIV?
YES - HIV is one of the 36 main critical illnesses that will be covered by most insurance companies. If you have critical illness cover before being diagnosed with HIV, you might be entitled to claim a cash lump sum.
Not all insurers will pay out for HIV, and you may have to meet specific conditions for a valid claim. You should check your policy documents or speak to your insurance company if you think you are entitled to claim on your critical illness policy.
Will health insurance cover HIV treatment?
NO – Private health insurance has been designed to cover new, acute medical conditions. As HIV is a chronic (long-term) condition, you won’t be able to claim to cover the cost of private HIV treatment.
Private health insurance can provide support in other areas and can still be useful for people living with HIV. For example, most insurers will offer online GP appointments which can be used by you and your whole family.
Would a HIV diagnosis affect my health insurance?
Health insurance works differently from life insurance and being HIV positive shouldn’t prevent you from buying a health insurance policy. You won’t usually be able to claim for HIV treatment or to treat complications caused by HIV, but can claim for other short-term medical issues.
