Frankie became a volunteer Terrence Higgins Trust Ambassador back in 2020 and has so far raised over £8,000 for our charity. Here’s why he got involved and what he’s worked on over the past two years.

When I was diagnosed with HIV in November 2020 I had no clue about the reality of HIV today. I didn’t know about the incredible progress we’ve made around HIV which means that people on effective HIV treatment can’t pass on the virus.

Having the support of friends and family, Terrence Higgins Trust’s services and being fortune enough to be diagnosed at a time where HIV treatment has come on leaps and bounds made me blessed. That was something I wanted to share. I didn’t feel scared anymore and wanted everyone to know HIV has changed since the 1980s – it’s not the death sentence it once was.

I wasn’t open about my HIV status straight away – it was a decision I made after speaking with family and coming to terms with my diagnosis. Unfortunately I have encountered some stigma and discrimination because of my HIV status – mainly a lack of understanding and education from others. It’s being asked by a colleague if it’s OK to use the same cup, or the look of panic when you tick the HIV box on a medical form. It is upsetting, but I remember not being educated on HIV before my diagnosis. I try to see negative comments from other people as a learning opportunity.

Dating is difficult as you just don’t know how and when to drop it into conversation and what the reaction will be. I had a few knock backs but again I try and understand their position and educate, not always successfully however at the end of the day, it really is their loss!

Volunteering and fundraising for Terrence Higgins Trust is one the most proudest achievements of my life. The thought that my time and effort can and is making even just a small difference to another person going through a life changing journey is amazing. I’m proud I’ve managed to turn something difficult into something positive and I’m incredibly grateful to Terrence Higgins Trust for giving me the opportunity.

So far I’ve organised a range of fundraising events – from sponsored walks to charity drag nights, raising almost £8,000 to support people affected by HIV. The feeling you get afterwards is so rewarding.

I would encourage anyone thinking about volunteering to just go for it. The charity is so welcoming and you can take on as much or as little as you like. It’s not pressured and they support you every step along the way. Volunteering has kept me up to date with the latest developments around HIV and allowed me to work alongside a group of individuals who share the same passions as me. It’s a real honour and privilege and one of her best things I’ve ever done.
