Twice-yearly injectable PrEP could be a game-changing tool in the fight to end new HIV cases by 2030. It would increase choice for people who cannot take PrEP as a pill, struggle with adherence, or face barriers to regularly attending sexual health services – including people in prison, people who are homeless or living in unstable housing, and people serving in the military.
We cannot repeat the mistakes made with oral PrEP, when delays and barriers to access meant people missed out on vital HIV prevention. If the UK is serious about ending new HIV cases and tackling the inequalities that continue to drive the epidemic, we need every effective prevention tool available.
We are calling on NICE, NHS England and Gilead to urgently come together and find a solution.
- NICE needs to be clear about what would change its mind, and recognise that assessing preventative innovation is different from approving treatments.
- Gilead must move on price so this innovation can be made affordable and accessible.
- NHS England must be ready to commission the volumes needed to make twice-yearly injectable PrEP available to those who need it most.
