Today, I start the most exciting job and a position I am truly honoured to take. Being the Chief Executive of Terrence Higgins Trust is a dream come true. I first met someone from the organisation at a National Union of Students LGBT+ Conference – the remarkable Lisa Power, who was then our Director of Policy. We were excited that a co-founder of Stonewall and long-standing LGBT Switchboard volunteer was one of our speakers, but her presentation about HIV and sexual health knocked the socks off the conference delegates, myself included.

I remember thinking at the time, “I would love that job”. It is the modern incarnation of that role, Campaigns Director, that I am leaving to take on this new challenge.

The excitement is met with equal amounts of trepidation. 2030 – when we and the UK Government aim to end new HIV cases by – is only seven years away, and there is so much more action needed to meet this remarkable and historic goal. Get it right and we could not only be the first country to end new HIV cases, but it could be the first virus stopped in its tracks without a cure or a vaccine. We cannot take our eyes off the prize. Equally, our organisation needs to be strong to deliver vital services until the last person living with HIV needs us. Sexual and reproductive health needs a step change to be the national priority it should be.

Ultimately, we cannot do it on our own. We have great partners and amazing supporters. Will you join them?

Here are three ways you can help us meet our ambitious goals:

  1. Sign our open letter for more HIV testing in A&E departments. Currently the Government only funds this amazing innovation in about 40 of the 80 their own guidance says it should be happening in. That is 500+ people a year going undiagnosed. We are doing this with our HIV and hepatitis partners and already have over 1,000 names.
  2. Fundraise for us. There are lots of ways you can help us raise funds, from workplace talks to challenge events. We are all ears about the ideas you have to help support our work. Just email [email protected] and we’ll come back to you.
  3. Support the Boutique – the fashion industry’s response to the HIV epidemic and Terrence Higgins Trust’s only charity shop. Our hidden gem has a major milestone coming up and we want to celebrate the amazing job they do of raising much needed funds. Do you work in fashion, retail, or a related area (or know someone that does) and want to help? Do you have an idea or a donation of pre-loved goods or unwanted gifts? Get in touch ASAP, we are keen to hear from you.

And it won’t surprise you that, as a charity, we are always looking for helpers and volunteers. We appreciate everyone that wants to support us.

I am lucky because I inherit an organisation from a remarkable leader – the wonderful Ian Green OBE leaves huge shoes to fill. In addition, I have a great team and an amazing bank of supporters.

No person could achieve these great ambitions on their own. Together we can change lives. For my part in the next chapter, wish me luck.
