Clive Blowes
Text

Clive Blowes (1965-2020) was a much-loved colleague, friend and advocate whose kindness, compassion and dedication left an enduring mark on Terrence Higgins Trust and the many people living with HIV whose lives he touched.

Over almost eight years, Clive served the organisation in many roles: as a passionate community support volunteer, volunteer manager, research and information officer, and finally, in what he called his 'dream role', supporting older people living with HIV. He approached every position with empathy and enthusiasm, and an inspiring determination to improve the lives of others.

'He was instrumental in pushing forward specialist support for those growing older with HIV and championed for funding and recognition'

Those who worked alongside Clive remember not only his achievements, but the person behind them. One former colleague recalled, 'He brought creativity, energy and fresh ideas to his work, and was always looking for ways to reduce isolation and build community'. Another remembered him as 'gentle, patient, kind, and lovely,' adding, 'I could not have asked for a better colleague by my side at the beginning of my career.'

'Clive was driven by a genuine desire to give back to his community and support others.'

Clive had a gift for bringing people together. Whether developing the Before 96 peer support group for long-term survivors, helping volunteers maximise their impact, or creating opportunities for older people living with HIV to connect and thrive, he believed in the power of community. He took great pride in moments such as speaking at international conferences and seeing service users experience special events that many had never imagined attending.

Beyond his professional contributions, Clive was a cherished friend. He was 'the kind of colleague people gravitated towards, generous with his time and genuinely interested in others'. His curiosity led him to train as a counsellor, reflecting his lifelong commitment to understanding and supporting those around him. Friends remember his wit, his love of music, his wonderful smile 'that could light up a room,' and, of course, his 'absolutely fantastic hair.'

Clive's dedication, friendship and compassion enriched countless lives, and he is remembered with immense gratitude, affection and respect. He is hugely missed.
