The HIV Research Trust was founded in 2002 to provide financial support to early- to mid-career researchers who are based in resource-limited settings and working in all fields of HIV prevention, infection and treatment.
Scholarships are awarded competitively following a peer-review process on an annual basis.

The HIV Research Trust is governed by a board of trustees based around the world. In 2021, the HIV Research Trust became a subsidiary of Terrence Higgins Trust.
