Kevin and Gavin’s story
Terrence Higgins Trust is a crucial part of Kevin and Gavin’s love story after meeting while working together in one of our health promotion services in Dundee back in 2013. So, when it came to planning their wedding, they knew they wanted to do something to mark the charity’s important place in their hearts.
Instead of wedding favours, every guest found one of our iconic Heart badges at their table and a note to say Kevin and Gavin had donated £500 to support our life-changing work.
'We were friends of a friend and although Dundee is quite small, we had hardly met', explains Gavin. 'Kevin used to share volunteering information on his Facebook page and I ended up getting involved.'
Fast forward almost a decade and the pair got engaged during a hike on Beinn Eighe in the Highlands during one of the semi-lockdowns of 2020. Then they started planning their big day, including guest list and outfits – as well as the finer details including wedding favours.
'Kevin thought favours were a bit of a waste of money and wanted to donate to a charity,' says Gavin. 'Whereas I quite liked the idea of giving a wee gift for our guests and we saw the Terrence Higgins Trust badges and thought that would be perfect.'
Kevin’s reasoning was charities needed all the support and awareness they could get, and they found the perfect solution with our beautiful Heart badges. 'We’ve got great photos of our mums, dads and other friends well into the night – and even the next day – still wearing the badges,' says Kevin.
Another part of the appeal – as well as celebrating the charity which brought them together – was the chance to share a little bit of information about HIV. 'It was really nice to know people were going in to see that we’d donated to Terrence Higgins Trust and raise awareness,' says Kevin.
'For most people it was their first gay wedding, and it opened some people’s eyes to things that aren’t necessarily on straight people’s radars – including how HIV has affected and shaped our community.'
