PrEP is a drug taken by HIV-negative people before and after sex that reduces the risk of getting HIV. In Scotland, PrEP is only available through sexual health clinics. You can find out more about PrEP and how to access it here.
Richard Angell OBE said: “The decision from the SMC to approve Cabotegravir (Apretude) for use in Scotland is extremely welcome. PrEP has been a game-changer, but there are stark inequalities in who is benefitting from oral PrEP.
To end new HIV cases by 2030, we have got to ensure that everyone in Scotland and across the UK can access the HIV prevention they need in a way that works for them. Today’s announcement is a step forward towards that. Many people across Scotland still struggle to get a PrEP appointment and not everyone who could benefit from PrEP knows about it. It’s time to expand PrEP access beyond sexual health services, through a digital service and community pharmacies.”
