In Parliament on 23 October 2024, the Government published its draft regulations for the compensation scheme for those infected and affected by the infected blood scandal.
Terrence Higgins Trust CEO Richard Angell comments:
'Nothing can compensate for the pain of losing a child or a parent. Those who were infected with HIV as a result of the contaminated blood scandal faced stigma, deteriorating health and – in many cases - death. As if seeing that happen to someone you love wasn’t enough; the affected victims have had to fight for decades for the truth about what happened to be made public.
'It has taken far too long for the affected victims of the Infected Blood Scandal to be eligible for the interim compensation payments. Campaigners have fought hard over the last two years for this. It is clear that Paymaster General Nick Thomas-Symons has made delivering these payments a priority and for that we thank him. The new process launched today streamlines applications for compensation payments to the estates of those lost in this scandal. That many families will now start to see their loss recognised by the government by the end of the year is a very welcome development.'
